Ihr Kinderlein, kommet

O come, little children, O come, one and all,
O come to the manger in Bethlehem’s stall
And see what the Father in heaven so true
Has done to prepare a bright Christmas for you.

Behold, in the manger, that strange little bed,
A Child, sweet and gentle, is resting His head,
A Babe, clad in garments so pure and so white,
And fairer by far than the angels of light.

On hay and on straw in the manger He lies;
Both Mary and Joseph, with fond, loving eyes,
Are gazing upon Him, and shepherds draw near,
And jubilant angels from heaven appear.

O kneel with the shepherds in worshipful prayer
And join the dear angels who also are there;
Sing glory to God in the heavens above
And thank Him for Jesus, the gift of His love.

"Ihr Kinderlein, kommet" (O, Come, Little Children) is a beloved German Christmas carol with a fascinating dual origin. Christoph von Schmid, a Catholic priest and children's author, penned the lyrics as an eight-stanza poem titled "Die Kinder bei der Krippe" in 1811. The melody, however, came earlier—composed in 1794 by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz as the secular song "Wie reizend, wie wonnig." It wasn't until around 1832 that teacher Friedrich Eickhoff united these two works, creating the iconic carol we know today. Published by C. Bertelsmann Verlag, this inspired pairing transformed the composition into an enduring holiday favourite celebrated worldwide.

Es Ist ein Ros Entsprungen - Brass Ensemble

Es Ist ein Ros Entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming)

Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming
As men of old have sung.
It came, a flower bright,
Amid the cold of winter
When half-gone was the night.

Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The Rose I have in mind:
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind.
To show God's love aright
She bore to men a Savior
When half-gone was the night.

This Advent and Christmas hymn, possibly dating to the fifteenth century, draws textually from Isaiah's prophecies. The "rose" emerging from Jesse's stem symbolizes Christ's birth as the source of life through death. Michael Praetorius published this beloved Advent hymn in 1609, directing its "rose" symbolism toward Christ's incarnation rather than Mary. Theodore Baker later translated the first two verses into English around 1894. The arrangement balances peaceful melody with subtle melancholy, reflecting the duality of Christmas—rejoicing in Christ's incarnation whilst acknowledging His sacrifice and promised return.

Melchior Vulpius, a contemporary of Praetorius composed a four-voice canon based upon the same melody. Though more concise in scope, the Vulpius canon functions effectively as a distinguished prelude to Praetorius's more expansive composition.
