Christoph von Schmid, a Catholic priest and children's author, penned the lyrics as an eight-stanza poem titled "Die Kinder bei der Krippe" in 1811. The melody, however, came earlier—composed in 1794 by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz as the secular song "Wie reizend, wie wonnig." It wasn't until around 1832 that teacher Friedrich Eickhoff united these two works, creating the iconic carol we know today. Published by C. Bertelsmann Verlag, this inspired pairing transformed the composition into an enduring holiday favourite celebrated worldwide.

As recorded on the 2025 album release from the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble, "Frohe Weihnachten!"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0737/0135/9914/files/page08_304db80b-23ee-4add-b4b8-4121a84bbd8c.jpg?v=1790007516
